Lake Union is located northeast of downtown Seattle.  On its shores are Queen Anne Hill, Fremont, Wallingford, the University of Washington, Montlake, Capitol Hill and the South Lake Union neighborhood.

Popular destinations on the lake include Gasworks Park and the Center for Wooden Boats.  Only a stone’s throw away are several real-life museums, including the Museum of History and Industry, History House and the Burke Museum of natural history and culture.

The Lake Union Virtual Museum is a museum without walls that exists only on the Internet.  It began as a one-man, no-budget, bicycle-powered project.  My name is Vaun Raymond, and I started creating this museum in the autumn of 2008 as a thesis project for the Master of Communication in Digital Media program at the University of Washington.

My goal was to create a rich Internet experience of local history through a variety of media, using commonly-available technology.  The tools I use are consumer-level cameras, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, GarageBand, a simple website design software called iWeb, and of course a bicycle.

I have been getting great support from Dick Wagner at the Center for Wooden Boats, and Kathy Gill, my advisor at U.W.  This project would not be possible without King County Snapshots, a collection of thousands of historical images, available to the public on the Web, thanks to the generosity of several local museums, libraries and historical societies.  In 2009 I received a grant from King County 4Culture, which has helped me continue work on this project.

I came to Seattle from Massachusetts in 1994 and I operate VSR Video, an independent video production company.  To learn more about the making of this website, please visit my Project Weblog.  I welcome your comments at: vaun@u.washington.edu.
